Bike to School Week

Did you know?

  • In 1969, 87% of all school children who lived within a mile of school walked or biked to school, and now only 33% do.
  • In the last 40 years, child obesity rates have soared, with 25 million children and adolescents—more than 33%–now overweight.
  • The increase in driving has contributed to air pollution, which, because of geography, is particularly bad in Utah County.
  • There has been a 74% increase in asthma among kids in the last 25 years.
  • Communities that are bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly are not only healthier, but are also more connected and happier.
Earlier this week I signed a proclamation declaring September 10-14 this year to be Bike-to-School Week, and I encourage students of all ages to walk or bike safely to school at least three times this week.
The Provo Bike Committee, along with the generous support of local bike shops, has worked with several schools to plan special activities for the week. And here’s what’s planned for the general public:
  • Mon., Monday Night Ride, 9 p.m., Joaquin Park
  • Wed., Free Bike Tune Up Clinic, 7 p.m., Provo Bicycle Collective, 49 N. 110 W. #2
  • Wed.,  Bike Polo, 7 p.m., Wells Fargo parking lot
  • Thur., West Side Family Bike Ride, 6:30 p.m., starting at Fort Utah Park, down the Provo River Parkway Trail and head back
  • Fri., Bike-in Movie (“ET”), 8 p.m., Joaquin Park
  • Sat., Provelo, 2-4 p.m., Paul Reams Wilderness Park

      Thanks for promoting bike-to-school week. This is one of many good efforts to get folks out of their cars and using safe, clean transportation options. However, may I suggest that you post a graphic with cyclist wearing a helmet.

    2. Encouraging middle and high school students south and east of BYU Campus is asking for trouble. To get to Centennial or Timpview schools requires that they either ride on 900 E (suicide alley for bikes in the morning) or take a circuitous route that will usually require that they either ride up on the east bench or find a route through BYU campus and the residential streets north of campus. Its a nice thought but rather impractical for some parts of the city.
