Provo Bike Challenge 2015

Bike_to_Work-0049

May is National Bike Month. If you’ve been looking for a good reason to park your car and take your bike instead – this is it! Monday, May 4, 2015 through Saturday, May 30, 2015 is the first annual Provo Bike Challenge. Whether you are a current bicyclist or a new rider this event is for you!

Make every day count

When days are long – ride for fun, to work, any time you can! This event is an easy way to challenge yourself, colleagues, and the Provo community to ride more. Participants are asked to record their daily/weekly miles ridden on nationalbikechallenge.org and points will be awarded throughout the challenge. They are awarded in the following two ways:

  1. 20 points are awarded for each day you ride at least 1 mile
  2. 1 point is awarded each mile ridden

Miles must be logged to the day they were ridden and rides can be logged at anytime over the month but must be logged or synced by 11:59 pm on Saturday, May 30, 2015.

You can also use any of these affiliated apps to track your miles using your smart phone: Strava, Map My Ride, Moves, or Endomondo. You can authorize any of these apps by simply editing your account on the National Bike Challenge site.

Prizes and Awards

All participants who live, work, or go to school in Provo are eligible for prizes and awards. Prize winners will be randomly selected each week and award winners will be announced at the end of the Challenge. Those who finish at the top of their category will be selected at the end of the Challenge in 3 different categories:

  • Work Site/ Organization (a min of 5 people)
  • Individual – Female
  • Individual – Male

Award winners will be honored on Tuesday, July 7 during Provo City’s Council Meeting and will receive a Provo Bike Challenge 2015 trophy.

  1. I’m not sure how to add our company as a work site. I think maybe whoever owns the Provo City “workplace” might have to add that? No big deal though. I’m in either way!!

    1. John

Wallaroo is now set up as a worksite!

  2. Karl

I know both the handsome dudes in that picture.

  3. Dave

If you join a Work Site/Organization are you ineligible to also compete as an individual?

    1. John

      Hi Dave,

Yes, you will be entered into both categories – individual and organization.

  4. carol

    Do
You have to live In Provo?

    1. John

Hi Carol, you don’t have to live in Provo. You can also participate if you commute to Provo.

  5. John

Does it count if I live in Provo but work in Orem?

    1. John

      Hi John, yes that counts!

  6. DS

    Thanks for promoting this!

  7. heather

So starting may 4, not may 1?

    1. John

Hi Heather – yes, Provo’s Bike Challenge starts May 4.

      1. Jon

Dang. I somehow overlooked this, but I guess my 16 miles yesterday were still worth the 958 calories burned! Back at it tomorrow.

  8. Maren

  9. Maren

I registered and selected “Provo City” as my work place, but I am not showing up on the local challenge. Did I do something incorrectly?

  10. Maren

Never mind, found it sorry 🙂

    1. John

Glad you found it. Let me know if you run into any other issues!

  11. Steven Dolbeare

Yesterday I created an account at nationalbikechallenge.org as directed. Under workplace I typed in Provo City, a drop down menu appeared, I clicked on Provo City, than I clicked on individual under work site. I have not received an email to confirm my account therefore my account has not been activated with Provo City. What can I do now???

    1. John

      Hi Steven,

I’m not sure why you didn’t get a confirmation email. I just checked the site and I’m seeing your account and your mileage so it looks like you are registered and good to go!

  12. Steven Dolbeare

On the nationalbikechallenge.org website when I click on local challenge, it asks for my zip code to find local challenge, I type in 84601 and the reply is “Your area does not have a local challenge. Locate an advocacy group to host your local challenge.” Help!

    1. John

      Hi Steve,

The deadline for Provo City to apply to host a Local Challenge was April 10, 2015 – which we missed. That is why our local challenge is not showing up in the search but we are still using nationalbikechallenge.com to track our mileage. If you follow the instructions to sign up you will be registered for Provo’s Bike Challenge. We will be able to see your total mileage and use your information to give out weekly prizes and awards.

      1. Steven Dolbeare

        Thank you!

  13. S.

I’m signed up, but when I try to look at the local leaderboard I get “Your area does not yet have a local challenge.” It’s based on ZIP code, so I tried all the Provo codes: 84604, 84601, 84606, 84602. Nothing. Is Provo signed up right, or is this a glitch on their end?

Got it, and I see that Steve asked the same thing just before me. Would be nice to see if I’m biking more than the mayor (etc.), but not essential, of course. Maybe we’ll get a weekly update?

PS- Why are the dates wrong for the comments? All show up with the same date as the original post?

  14. LL

Does spin class at the Rec Center count? 🙂

    1. John

Sure! But only if you go shorter than me.

      -John

  15. Aaron

Looks like Wavetronix is setup as the Worksite, instead of a workplace in Provo City.

    1. John

      Hi Aaron,

Would you like Wavetronix set up as worksite? We can add them to the challenge. We just need number of employees and the address.

  16. Maren Gibson

Where are the results going to be posted:-)?

    1. John

      Hi Maren,

We will be posting the results today by 6pm. We are drafting the announcement right now.

      1. Maren Gibson

Wonderful, and thank you again for running the event, very fun!
